If your research has been federally funded, then you are subject to certain requirements.

- Data Requirements
- What if my NIH-funded research did not result in any publications?
- Does any of this apply to training grants such as the T35?
Still not sure what you need to do? Check out the NIH’s Which Policies Apply to My Research? guide. If you’re still confused, reach out to the NECO Library at [email protected] and we can assist.
What are the requirements for publications resulting from NIH-funded studies?
- An electronic version of any published peer-reviewed manuscript must be submitted to PubMed Central (PMC) upon publication. This is referred to as the “author accepted manuscript” (as opposed to the “final published article” that appears in a journal).
- Per the NIH Grants Policy Statement: “Each publication, press release, or other document about research supported by an NIH grant must include:
- An acknowledgment of NIH grant support such as: Research reported in this [publication, release] was supported by [name of the Institute, Center, or other funding component] of the National Institutes of Health under grant number [specific NIH grant number in this format: R01GM012345].
- A disclaimer that says: The content is solely the responsibility of the authors and does not necessarily represent the official views of the National Institutes of Health.”
Who is responsible for submitting the author accepted manuscript to PMC?
The journal in which I’m publishing doesn’t submit the article to PMC on my behalf. How do I submit it on my own?
Can I deposit a preprint to meet the PMC article submission requirement?
What are the requirements for data resulting from NIH-funded studies?
Any data associated with research that was initially funded on or after January 23, 2023 must be deposited in a public data repository. For these studies, a Data Management and Sharing Plan (DMSP) was submitted with the application. The PI is required to follow the proposed steps in that plan, including data sharing. Learn more via the NIH’s Data Management & Sharing Policy Overview, or reach out to a NECO librarian at [email protected].
How do I write a Data Management and Sharing Plan?
Who is responsible for depositing NIH-funded scientific data in a public repository?
Where am I supposed to deposit my scientific data (and how do I go about it)?
What if my NIH-funded research did not result in any publications?
Any research funded on or after January 23, 2023 that generates scientific data (defined as “any data needed to validate and replicate research findings”) requires compliance with the 2023 Data Management and Sharing Policy, “regardless of whether the data are used to support scholarly publications.” Reach out to the NECO Library at [email protected] if you want assistance with depositing your data in a public repository.
Does any of this apply to training grants such as the T35?
If the funding directly resulted in a publishable manuscript, and/or if it generated scientific data (defined as “any data needed to validate and replicate research findings”) then yes it does. If the training grant did not generate scientific data, then it does not apply.
